Artist
Cindy Sherman
b. 1954 · American
Cindy Sherman has used herself as model, costume department, makeup artist and photographer for more than four decades, but her pictures are not conventional self-portraits. Emerging with the Pictures Generation in late-1970s New York, she constructed characters that resemble familiar images from cinema, fashion, advertising and art history without reproducing specific originals. Later series expanded into centerfolds, grotesque bodies, historical portraiture, clowns, society figures and digitally manipulated characters.
