Artist
Daniel Buren
b. 1938 · French
Daniel Buren has used alternating 8.7-centimeter vertical stripes since the mid-1960s as a deliberately neutral visual tool for examining the spaces in which art appears. Installed on walls, windows, streets, architecture and public sites, the stripes shift attention from the supposed autonomy of the artwork toward framing, circulation and context.
