Gordon Walters developed a precise geometric abstraction built around the koru, a spiral form derived from Māori visual culture. From the 1960s onward his black-and-white paintings became central to New Zealand modernism, while also generating important debates about cultural appropriation and Pākehā use of Māori forms.
