Joseph Beuys became one of postwar Europe’s most influential and controversial artists through actions, installations and a theory of 'social sculpture' that expanded art into pedagogy and political participation. Felt, fat, copper, honey and animals recur as symbolic materials. His self-mythologizing biography and later political activities became inseparable from the work.
