Artist
Kurt Schwitters
1887–1948 · German
Kurt Schwitters built his practice around the word Merz, an invented category encompassing collage, assemblage, typography, poetry and architecture. Ordinary scraps—tickets, newspaper, labels and found wood—became raw material, while the Merzbau expanded collage into an evolving inhabitable environment.
