León Ferrari developed an uncompromising practice that combined abstract calligraphic drawing with direct critiques of war, religion and authoritarian power. His 1965 sculpture The Western and Christian Civilization, placing Christ on a U.S. fighter jet, became an emblem of Latin American political art.
