Lorraine O’Grady developed a rigorous conceptual and performance practice that challenged racism, sexism and exclusion within the art world. Her persona Mlle Bourgeoise Noire invaded galleries and public events in the early 1980s, while later photo-text and collage works examined family, diaspora and representation.
