Malangatana Ngwenya developed dense, brightly colored paintings populated by crowds, spirits, animals and contorted bodies. His work emerged under Portuguese colonial rule and was shaped by imprisonment, anticolonial struggle and the violence surrounding Mozambique’s later civil conflict.
