Toyen, born Marie Čermínová, became a central figure of the Czech avant-garde and later Surrealism in Paris. Rejecting conventional gender identity and using the gender-neutral pseudonym Toyen, the artist developed eerie landscapes, fragmented bodies and charged erotic imagery.
