Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde developed one of the most concentrated abstract practices in postwar Indian art. Working slowly and producing relatively few paintings, he built luminous fields through rollers, palette knives and layered pigment. He resisted the label 'abstract,' preferring to describe his work as nonobjective.
