Zanele Muholi describes their practice as visual activism, building an extensive photographic archive of Black LGBTQIA+ lives in South Africa and beyond. Portrait series such as Faces and Phases emphasize community, self-representation and historical visibility, while Somnyama Ngonyama uses Muholi’s own body to examine race, labor and the politics of looking.
