Alex Hartley investigates the contested ideologies of wilderness, modern architecture, and utopian isolation. Frequently embedding framed photographs within heavy architectural plinths, or building derelict, overgrown modernist pavilions directly inside white-cube galleries, Hartley's practice questions romantic conceptions of untouched nature. For the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, he discovered an uncharted Arctic island created by glacial retreat and sailed it to the UK as the micronation 'Nowhereisland'.
