Alfred Stieglitz helped establish photography as a modern art form in the United States through his own work, the journal Camera Work, and galleries including 291. His photographs moved from atmospheric Pictorialism toward a more direct modernism, while his exhibitions introduced European avant-garde artists to American audiences.
