Anselm Kiefer
b. 1945 · German
Anselm Kiefer developed a monumental practice around German history, memory, mythology, poetry and the material aftermath of catastrophe. Beginning with the controversial Occupations photographs of 1969, he confronted the suppressed legacy of Nazism and later built enormous paintings and installations from straw, lead, ash, earth, concrete and books.
