Georg Baselitz emerged in West Germany in the early 1960s with deliberately abrasive figurative paintings. From 1969 he began painting motifs upside down, separating the act of painting from conventional narrative orientation. His rough-hewn wood sculptures extended the same emphasis on material aggression.
