Art & Language began in Britain in the late 1960s as a loose collaborative group using essays, conversations, journals and analytic propositions to interrogate the conditions under which art acquires meaning. The journal Art-Language, founded in 1969, made critical discourse itself an artistic medium. Membership changed dramatically over time, with Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden becoming long-term central figures.
