Auguste Rodin transformed nineteenth-century sculpture through fragmented bodies, visibly worked surfaces and an approach to casting that allowed figures and details to migrate between compositions. The Gates of Hell became a lifelong reservoir from which many of his most famous independent sculptures emerged.
