Edgar Degas

1834–1917 · French

Edgar Degas shared exhibitions with the Impressionists but pursued a more studio-based investigation of modern urban life. Ballet dancers, laundresses, café interiors, racecourses and women bathing allowed him to test unusual viewpoints, cropped compositions and the possibilities of pastel, monotype and sculpture.
