Betty Woodman (1930–2018) was the first living female artist to receive a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. Deconstructing utilitarian pottery through exuberantly painted ceramic wings and canvas backdrops inspired by Italian maiolica and Matisse, Woodman revolutionized ceramic fine art.
