Paul Gauguin moved from an early association with Impressionism toward a deliberately anti-naturalistic language of flattened color, strong contour and symbolic narrative. His periods in Brittany, Martinique, Tahiti and the Marquesas became central to his art and also demand critical attention to the colonial conditions through which he represented other cultures.
