Fred Wilson
b. 1954 · American
Fred Wilson became a defining figure of institutional critique through installations that rearrange museum collections to expose how display, labeling and omission shape historical narratives. Mining the Museum, created at the Maryland Historical Society in 1992, juxtaposed decorative objects with instruments of enslavement and reframed institutional authority through curatorial intervention.
