Gerard Sekoto
1913–1993 · South African
Gerard Sekoto was one of the first Black South African artists to establish a significant career in modern painting. Before leaving for Paris in 1947, he painted urban communities in Sophiatown, District Six and Eastwood with compressed space, strong color and close attention to everyday social life.
