Gerhard Richter

b. 1932 · German

Gerhard Richter has spent six decades moving between photo-based painting, monochrome, color charts, landscapes, portraits and large abstract canvases. After leaving East Germany for Düsseldorf in 1961, he developed blurred paintings from photographs that questioned both documentary truth and painterly authorship. His Atlas archive became an evolving repository of source images and ideas.
