Giorgio de Chirico

1888–1978 · Italian, born Greece

Giorgio de Chirico developed Metaphysical painting in the years before World War I, filling deserted plazas with arcades, statues, long shadows, mannequins and inexplicable objects. These images profoundly influenced the Surrealists even as de Chirico later rejected much of modernism and returned to historical styles.
