Hélio Oiticica

1937–1980 · Brazilian

Hélio Oiticica moved from geometric painting into environments, wearable Parangolés and immersive installations that made color something to enter, carry and perform. His engagement with samba schools and Rio’s Mangueira community shaped an art of bodily participation that challenged museum etiquette and social hierarchy.
