Izumi Kato is an acclaimed Japanese painter and sculptor whose enigmatic, primordial humanoid creatures—painted with bare hands on canvas or carved from collected river stones and wood—possess wide insect-like eyes, elongated limbs, and alien spiritual vitality. Drawing on Shinto animism, his figures hover between innocence and uncanny menace.
