Marcel Broodthaers

1924–1976 · Belgian

Marcel Broodthaers turned from poetry to visual art in 1964 and quickly built a practice from language, found objects, mussel shells, eggs, maps, film and fictional museum structures. His Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles, initiated in 1968, staged a museum without a conventional collection in order to question how cultural authority is produced.
