Artist
Max Beckmann
1884–1950 · German
Max Beckmann emerged before World War I with an ambitious figurative style that became harsher after his wartime medical service. Thick black contour, compressed interiors and allegorical figures define a mature practice culminating in large triptychs. He left Nazi Germany in 1937 and later settled in the United States.
