Pope.L
1955–2023 · American
Pope.L, born William Pope, developed a confrontational performance practice around race, class, endurance and social visibility. His crawls, begun in the late 1970s, involved moving through public space on hands and knees, while later installations used food, text, odor and absurd systems to destabilize social categories.
