Shirin Neshat
b. 1957 · Iranian-American
Shirin Neshat developed an influential practice around gender, exile, religion and political power through photography, video and film. Her Women of Allah series juxtaposed portraits of veiled women with Persian calligraphy and weapons; later multi-channel videos use cinematic staging and opposing screens to examine social separation.
