Yinka Shonibare

b. 1962 · British-Nigerian

Yinka Shonibare uses Dutch wax fabric, Victorian costume, sculpture, photography and film to examine colonialism, class and cultural hybridity. His headless mannequins often stage scenes drawn from European aristocratic culture while wearing fabrics widely associated with African identity but produced through complex colonial trade histories.
