About

The Smithsonian American Art Museum traces American visual culture from the eighteenth century to the present. Its collection brings painting and sculpture into conversation with photography, self-taught art and contemporary media in Washington’s historic Patent Office Building.

Why visit

Use the collection to follow competing ideas of American life across different media and communities. The Luce Center and visible conservation facilities offer another way to look at how a museum stores, studies and cares for art.
