Artist
Wayne Thiebaud
1920–2021 · American
Wayne Thiebaud became known in the early 1960s for paintings of cakes, pies, ice cream, deli counters and other ordinary foods rendered with thick, luminous paint. Based largely in California, he later developed vertiginous San Francisco cityscapes and expansive Sacramento River landscapes. He resisted the Pop label, emphasizing observation and painting over mass-media appropriation.
