Alex Katz developed a deliberately flat, cropped figurative style in the 1950s and 1960s that remained independent of both Abstract Expressionism and Pop. Portraits of friends and family, especially Ada Katz, alongside landscapes and flowers use broad areas of color and sharply simplified forms derived partly from cinema, advertising and direct observation.
