Andy Warhol moved from commercial illustration into fine art at the beginning of the 1960s and quickly made repetition, celebrity and consumer imagery central to Pop Art. Campbell’s soup cans, Marilyn Monroe, car crashes and Brillo boxes treated mass-circulated images as raw material. At the Factory, Warhol expanded his practice into film, photography, music, publishing and the production of celebrity itself. His later work returned repeatedly to portraiture and art-historical subjects while maintaining a deliberately porous boundary between art, commerce and media.
