Jean Tinguely built kinetic sculptures from scrap metal, motors, wheels and mechanical debris, often allowing machines to draw, clatter or destroy themselves. His 1960 Homage to New York attempted spectacular self-destruction in the sculpture garden of MoMA and became a defining image of postwar kinetic art.
