Niki de Saint Phalle

1930–2002 · French-American

Niki de Saint Phalle first gained attention through her Tirs, performances in which she fired a rifle at plaster reliefs containing bags of paint. From the mid-1960s she developed the exuberant Nanas—large, brightly colored female figures—and later devoted decades to immersive environments including the Tarot Garden in Tuscany.
