Joan Miró

Joan Miró was born in Barcelona in 1893 and developed a practice shaped by the landscapes of Mont-roig, the avant-garde circles of Paris and, later, Mallorca. The Farm condensed observed rural life into an almost encyclopedic field of signs; soon afterward works such as The Hunter and The Birth of the World pushed those signs toward a more dreamlike language that attracted the Surrealists. Miró resisted being contained by any single movement. Across painting, collage, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and tapestry, he repeatedly dismantled and rebuilt his vocabulary of stars, birds, women, eyes and constellations. In his later decades he worked at increasingly monumental scale without losing the economy of his drawn line.
