Jörg Immendorff studied with Joseph Beuys and first became known for politically engaged actions and paintings linked to the LIDL project. His large Café Deutschland series, begun in the late 1970s, staged the division of East and West Germany as crowded, theatrical interiors populated by artists, politicians and historical symbols.
