Lee Ufan

b. 1936 · Korean-born, based Japan/France

Lee Ufan became the central theorist of Mono-ha in Japan around 1968, arguing for encounters between minimally altered natural and industrial materials rather than conventional object-making. Parallel painting series use repeated brushstrokes and large areas of unpainted canvas to stage relations between mark, surface and time.
