Margaret Preston became one of Australia’s most influential modernists through bold still lifes, woodcuts and designs that combined Japanese print aesthetics, modernist simplification and an interest in Aboriginal visual culture. Her attempts to formulate a distinctively Australian modern art were influential but also involved appropriation that requires critical context.
