Artist

Albert Namatjira

1902–1959 · Australian Aboriginal, Western Arrernte

Albert Namatjira became one of Australia’s most famous artists through luminous watercolor landscapes of Central Australia. Trained in European watercolor techniques but painting his own Country, he developed a distinctive landscape language and inspired the Hermannsburg School. His fame also exposed the racial contradictions of Australian citizenship laws.
