On Kawara

1932–2014 · Japanese

On Kawara built one of Conceptual art’s most rigorous meditations on time, presence and mortality. Beginning in 1966, his Today series consisted of date paintings made according to strict rules in whatever city he occupied. Parallel projects—telegrams stating I AM STILL ALIVE, postcards recording when he got up, maps tracing daily movements and lists of people met—turned ordinary existence into a disciplined archive.
