Piero Manzoni rejected expressive painting in favor of works that test authorship, material value and the status of the art object. His Achromes removed conventional color; Artist’s Breath and Artist’s Shit treated bodily products as commodities; Living Sculptures and the Base of the World extended authorship onto people and ultimately the planet itself.
