Roberto Gil de Montes is a painter whose rich figurative works intertwine Mexican indigenous cosmologies, personal memory, queer desire, and tropical everyday life. A pivotal figure in the Chicano art movement and the Los Angeles art scene during the 1970s and 1980s, Gil de Montes later relocated to coastal Nayarit. His luminous canvases feature dreamlike beachscapes, masks, domestic interiors, and melancholic figures bathed in evocative, theatrical light.
