Tyeb Mehta emerged from the Bombay art world alongside artists associated with the Progressive Artists’ Group, though he was not a formal founding member. His paintings of falling figures, rickshaw pullers, trussed bulls and mythic characters use hard diagonals, flat color and compressed bodies to address violence, vulnerability and fracture.
