1934–2003 · Indian
Bhupen Khakhar was a largely self-taught painter associated with Baroda whose work combined everyday Indian life, popular imagery, devotional formats and autobiographical experience. From the 1980s he addressed his homosexuality directly, becoming one of the most important openly queer voices in modern Indian art.
