Umberto Boccioni

Umberto Boccioni became the central theorist and most ambitious visual artist of Italian Futurism. After early Divisionist training, he translated the movement’s fascination with speed, urbanization and modern technology into paintings and sculptures that attempt to fuse bodies with surrounding space. His 1912 Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture argued for a sculpture open to environment and movement; he died during military service in 1916.
