Ibrahim El-Salahi

b. 1930 · Sudanese

Ibrahim El-Salahi became a foundational figure in African modernism through a practice that joined modernist abstraction with Arabic calligraphy, Islamic visual traditions and Sudanese cultural references. After study in London and work in Khartoum, he developed an increasingly spare, calligraphic language. A period of political imprisonment in 1975 profoundly shaped his subsequent work.
