Kazuo Shiraga

Kazuo Shiraga became one of Gutai’s defining artists by suspending himself from a rope and painting with his feet across canvases spread on the floor. His earlier performance Challenging Mud placed his entire body inside a mass of clay, establishing the physical encounter with material that would drive his painting.
